of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?! (1)
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī in his Musnad, through ʿAmr ibn Thābit, from Abū Isḥāq, from Khumayr, who said: “I heard Ibn Masʿūd declare, ‘I am going to conceal my codex…,’ and he related the rest of the report. (2)
Al-Wāqidī narrated—al-Thawrī told us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Zayd ibn Wahb—who said: “ʿAbd Allāh came to us, so we entered to see him and said, ‘Recite Sūrah al-Baqarah for us.’ He replied, ‘I do not have it memorised.’” This report is transmitted only by al-Wāqidī, and he is rejected. (3)
Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd related, on the authority of al-Zuhrī, who said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed me that Ibn Masʿūd objected to Zayd ibn Thābit being put in charge of copying the Qur’anic codices, saying, “People of Islam! Am I to be removed from the work of transcribing the muṣḥafs while it is handed over to a man who—by Allah—was still in his father’s loins a disbeliever when I had already embraced Islam?” He meant Zayd ibn Thābit.
For that reason ʿAbd Allāh used to say, “People of Kūfah, keep the codices that are with you hidden and guard them carefully, for Allah has said, ‘Whoever defrauds shall bring what he has defrauded on the Day of Resurrection’ (Q 3:161); so meet Allah with your codices.” (4)
Al-Zuhrī said: “News reached me that Ibn Masʿūd’s statement displeased some men…"
