then said,
“O people! Allah is our Lord, Islam is our religion, the Qur’an is our guide, the House (the Kaʿbah) is our qiblah, and this is our Prophet”—and he pointed to the Prophet ﷺ—“We accept whatever Allah and His Messenger have approved for us, and we loathe whatever Allah and His Messenger have loathed for us. Peace be upon you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Ibn Umm ʿAbd has spoken correctly and truthfully. I am pleased with what Allah is pleased with for my community, and so is Ibn Umm ʿAbd; and I dislike what Allah dislikes for my community, and so does Ibn Umm ʿAbd.” ⦗1⦘
Its chain of transmission is broken.
It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in his Muʿjam.
I copied it from the manuscript of the ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī with the name “Ibn Khuthaym” ⦗2⦘, but the correct version is Saʿīd ⦗3⦘ ibn Jubayr, from Abū al-Dardāʾ, and that is how it appears in Tārīkh Dimashq.
It was also narrated by Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Warkānī from Abū Shihāb in similar wording.
Yet Saʿīd never met Abū al-Dardāʾ, and I do not know who Muḥtasib is.
Isrāʾīl, on the authority of Abū Isḥāq, reported:
I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd say, “We said to Ḥudhayfah, ‘Tell us of a man whose bearing and deportment are closest to those of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that we may accompany him.’”
He replied, “I do not know anyone whose conduct, guidance, and demeanor more closely resemble those of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—so long as the wall of his house does not hide him from view—than Ibn Umm ʿAbd.
“And the memorizers among Muhammad’s Companions know full well that Ibn Umm ʿAbd is among those of them nearest to Allah in rank.” ⦗4⦘
