ʿAffān reported: al-Aswad ibn Shaybān narrated to us; Abū Nawfal ibn Abī ʿAqrab narrated to us; he said:
When ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ lay ill and was overcome with anxiety, someone said to him, “Was not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ close to you and did he not appoint you to office?!”
He replied, “By Allah, I do not know what that truly meant—whether it was out of love or whether he was simply winning my heart. Yet I can testify about two men that he died while loving them: Ibn Umm ʿAbd and Ibn Sumayya.” (1)
Abū Nuʿaym reported: Fitr ibn Khalīfah narrated to us, from Kathīr al-Nawwāʾ;

This was also related by ʿAlī ibn Hāshim ibn al-Barīd from Kathīr, but he halted the report at ʿAlī, and that version is the more likely.
I was informed by al-Khushūʿī and others that Murshid ibn Yaḥyā informed them; he said:
Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ṭaffāl informed us; Abū al-Ṭāhir al-Duhlī informed us; Abū Aḥmad Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdūs narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Wakīʿ narrated to us, from his father and from Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah, who said:
ʿAbd Allāh said: “I reached Abū Jahl while he was lying mortally wounded, and he was…”
