—on the day ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd passed away. One of them said to the other, “Do you think he has left anyone behind who equals him?” His companion replied, “If you say that, remember that he was granted admission whenever we were turned away, and he was present whenever we were absent.”
Yahya transmitted it from Qutbah, from al-Aʿmash, from Mālik ibn al-Hārith, from Abū al-Ahwaṣ with the same wording (1).
Al-Bukhārī and al-Nasāʾī also relate—through Abū Mūsā—that he said:
“My brother and I arrived from Yemen and stayed for a while, and we thought that Ibn Masʿūd and his mother were members of the Prophet’s household ﷺ because of how frequently they would enter and leave his presence.” (2)
Al-Aʿmash narrated from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, from Abū Mūsā, who said:
“By Allah, I saw ʿAbd Allah, and I considered him nothing but a servant of the family of Muhammad ﷺ.” (3)
Al-Salafī reported to us (4); al-Thaqafī narrated to us; Ibn Bishrān informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār narrated to us; Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUbayd Allah, from Ibrāhīm ibn Suwayd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd Allah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “O ʿAbd Allah! You have my permission to lift the curtain and to listen to my suwādī (private conversation)….”
