Ibn Ṣaṣrā informed us; so did Abū al-Qāsim al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥasan al-Asadī and Abū Yaʿlá ibn al-Ḥabūbī. (ح)
Ibrāhīm ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭāʾī, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Urmawī, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī of Damascus, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mardāwī, Aḥmad ibn Muʾmin, and Sitt al-Fakhr bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān likewise informed us, saying:
“Karīmah bint ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Qurashiyyah told us; Abū Yaʿlá Ḥamzah ibn al-Ḥabūbī informed us.” They continued:
“ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Faqīh informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUthmān al-Tamīmī informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Thābit informed us—both of them saying:
‘al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah al-ʿAbdī informed us.’” (ح)
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad, Muslim ibn Muḥammad, and ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad also informed us, saying:
“Ḥanbal informed us; Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn informed us; Ibn al-Mudhhīb informed us; Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī informed us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad al-Shaybānī informed us; my father related to me; they said:
‘Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh informed us; ʿĀṣim narrated to me, from Zirr, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“I was tending sheep for ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr passed by. The Prophet said, ‘Young man, do you have any milk?’ I replied, ‘Yes, but I am entrusted with the flock.’ He asked, ‘Is there a ewe that the ram has not yet covered?’ I brought him such a ewe; he stroked her udder and milk started to flow. He milked it into a vessel, drank, and then gave Abū Bakr to drink. He then said to the udder, ‘Retract,’ and it did so.
“Aḥmad adds: I came to him again after that.
“Both narrations agree that I then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me some of these words.’ He passed his hand over my head and said, ‘May Allah have mercy on you; you are a little lad who will be taught.’”’
This report possesses an authentic chain of transmission (1).
Abū ʿAwana also transmitted it from ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah with additional material, among which is:
‘I took seventy surahs directly from his mouth ﷺ, and no one ever disputed with me about them.’
