Ibn Abī ʿArūbah transmitted—from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab (1)—that ʿUmar said something to the same effect, and he also named Abū ʿUbaydah and Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah, together with him.
Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī reported—from Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Thaqafī—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “On the Day of Resurrection Muʿādh will come in front of the scholars, ahead of the scholars.” This report has another chain that is weak.
Hishām narrated—from al-Ḥasan, as a marfūʿ report: “Muʿādh will stand a stone’s throw ahead of the scholars on the Day of Resurrection.” Thābit corroborated it from al-Ḥasan.
Ibn Saʿd said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar informed us, Isḥāq ibn Yaḥyā related to us, from Mujāhid, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Mecca, he appointed ʿAttāb ibn Asīd to lead them in prayer, and left Muʿādh there to teach them the Qur’an and instruct them in jurisprudence (2).
Abū Usāmah narrated—from Dāwūd ibn Yazīd—from al-Mughīrah ibn Shubayl—from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim—from Muʿādh: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched me to Yemen. After I had set out, he sent someone after me, so I was brought back. He said, ‘Do you know why I summoned you? Never take anything without sound knowledge, for that is embezzlement: “Whoever embezzles will bring what he embezzled with him on the Day of Resurrection” (Āl ʿImrān 3:161). You have been forewarned—now proceed with your task.’” (3) Al-Ruyānī recorded it in his Musnad.
