Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī corroborated it on the authority of Masrūq.
Al-Thawrī transmitted—from Khālid and ʿĀṣim—from Abū Qilābah—from Anas—as a report traced back to the Prophet ﷺ: “The most compassionate of my community toward my community is Abū Bakr; the firmest of them in Allah’s religion is ʿUmar; the most truthful of them in modesty is ʿUthmān; the most knowledgeable of them concerning the lawful and the unlawful is Muʿādh; the one best versed in the laws of inheritance is Zayd; every nation has a trustee, and the trustee of this nation is Abū ʿUbaydah.” (1)
Wahīb also narrated it from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ.
In the Fawāʾid of Sammūyah it is recorded: Aḥmad ibn Yūnus related to us; Salām ibn Sulaymān related to us; Zayd al-ʿAmmī related to us—from Abū al-Ṣiddīq—from Abū Saʿīd—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Muʿādh ibn Jabal is the most knowledgeable of people regarding Allah’s prohibitions and permissions.” (2) Its chain of transmission is weak.
Ḍamrah narrated—from Yaḥyā al-Saybānī—from Abū al-ʿAjfāʾ—who said: ʿUmar stated, “If I were to encounter Muʿādh alive, appoint him (as successor), and then meet my Lord, and He asked me, ‘Whom did you place in charge of the community of Muhammad?’ I would reply, ‘I heard Your Prophet and servant say: “Muʿādh ibn Jabal will come on the Day of Resurrection ahead of the scholars by a bowshot.”’” (3)
