Saʿd ibn ʿAli ibn Asad ibn Sāridah ibn Yazīd ibn Jusham ibn al-Khazraj.
Al-Sayyid, the Imām, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī al-Madanī, one of the men of Badr; he had also witnessed the Pledge of al-ʿAqabah while still a young, beardless youth.
He related a number of hadiths.
Among those who transmitted from him were: Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, Jābir, Anas, Abū Umāmah, Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushani, Mālik ibn Yakhāmir, Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm, Junādah ibn Abī Umayyah, Abū Baḥriyyah ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays, Yazīd ibn ʿUmayrah, Abū al-Aswad al-Dīlī, Kathīr ibn Murrah, Abū Wāʾil, Ibn Abī Laylā, ʿAmr ibn Maymūn al-Awdi, al-Aswad ibn Hilāl, Masrūq, Abū Ẓabiyyah al-Kalāʿī, and others.
Abū Isḥāq al-Sabiʿī narrated—from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn—from Muʿādh ibn Jabal—that he said:
“I was riding pillion behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a donkey called ʿUfayr.” (1)
Shabāb said: His mother was Hind bint Sahl, of the Banū Rifāʿah and later affiliated with Juhaynah; she also bore a child to al-Jadd ibn Qays.
Al-Wāqidī, on the authority of his informants, reported that Muʿādh was present at Badr when he was twenty, or twenty-one, years old.
Ibn Saʿd said: According to all of their reports, he witnessed the Pledge of al-ʿAqabah together with the seventy. (2)
