Medina. Afterwards, Jaʿfar arrived with the rest of the emigrants during the days of Khaybar.
Abū Mūsā al-Aṣbahānī, the ḥāfiẓ, said: The Negus’s name was Aṣḥama. Others said it was Aṣḥam ibn Bujrā.
He had a son called Urmā, whom he sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but the boy died on the road.
Another opinion holds that the man who accompanied ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ was ʿUmārah ibn al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī.
Abū Kurayb and Muḥammad ibn Ādam (1) al-Miṣṣīṣī reported:
“Asad ibn ʿAmr told us; Mujālid (2) narrated from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, from his father, who said:
‘Quraysh dispatched ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ and ʿUmārah ibn al-Walīd with a gift from Abū Sufyān to the Negus.
While we were in his presence they said to him, “Some men from the lowest and most foolish among us have come to you; hand them over to us.”
He replied, “No, not until I have heard what they have to say…,” and he recounted something to that effect.
He then ordered a herald to announce, “Whoever harms any one of them shall be fined four dirhams.” He asked, “Is that enough for you?” We said, “No.” So he doubled the amount.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emigrated to Medina and became established there, we said to the Negus, “Our companion has gone to Medina and emigrated, and the man about whom we told you has been killed (3). We now wish to travel to him, so please supply us with provisions.” He replied, “Certainly.”
He provided mounts for us, supplied provisions, and gave us gifts. Then he said, “Inform your companion of what I have done for you; this envoy of mine will accompany you. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that he is the Messenger of Allah. Tell him to seek forgiveness for me.”’
Jaʿfar continued: ‘We set out until we reached Medina, where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to meet me and embraced me (4).’
