Ahmad ibn Ya‘qūb related that my grandfather narrated to us, Khalaf ibn Sālim narrated to us, Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us, Juwayriya narrated to us, and Yahyā ibn Saʿīd, on the authority of his uncle, said:
“When the day arrived on which ʿAmmār was struck down, a man suddenly rode out between the two battle-lines—massive in build, mounted on an enormous horse—calling out, in a voice filled with anguish: ‘Servants of Allah! Make for Paradise—make for Paradise—make for Paradise! Paradise is beneath the shade of the spears.’ The people surged forward, and it proved to be ʿAmmār himself; before long he was killed.”
With this same chain my grandfather Yaʿqūb told us, ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us, ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated to us, from Abū al-Bakhtarī al-Ṭāʾī, who said:
“ʿAmmār exchanged words with a certain man, and the man waxed insolent toward him. ʿAmmār replied, ‘Then I am like someone who neglects the Friday bath.’ The man came back and renewed his insolence (1). So ʿAmmār said to him, ‘If you are lying, may Allah increase your wealth and your children, and may people trample your heels.’”
And with this same chain my grandfather told us, Wuhaib ibn Jarīr narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Ṣilah ibn Zufar, from ʿAmmār, that he said:
“Three qualities—whoever possesses them has perfected faith (or, he said, they belong to the completeness of faith): giving in charity while in straitened circumstances, treating others with the same justice you demand for yourself, and spreading the greeting of peace to all people.” (2)
I read before Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq, who informed us, and Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Fatḥ and al-Fatḥ ibn ʿAbd Allāh likewise told us, saying:
“Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Urmawī informed us, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad informed us, ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar al-Sukkārī narrated to us, Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ṣūfī narrated to us, and Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn narrated …”
