Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, on the authority of Mujāhid, from ʿAbd-Allāh ibn ʿAmr—in a report traced back to the Prophet—said: “The killer of ʿAmmār and the one who strips him will both be in the Fire.” (1)
Ibn Abī Khālid narrated—from Qays, or someone else—that ʿAmmār said: “Bury me in my clothes, for I am a man who will press his claim.” (2)
ʿĀṣim ibn Ḍamrah reported that ʿAlī performed the funeral prayer over ʿAmmār without washing his body. (3)
Abū ʿĀṣim stated: “ʿAmmār lived for ninety-three years. He never rode with a saddle; he would ride his mount bare.”
ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Ṭāwūs, on the authority of Abū Bakr ibn Ḥazm, said:
“When ʿAmmār was killed, ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm went in to ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ and said, ‘ʿAmmār has been killed, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The rebellious faction will kill him.”’
“Alarmed, ʿAmr rose and hurried to Muʿāwiyah, who asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’
“He replied, ‘ʿAmmār has been killed.’
“Muʿāwiyah said, ‘ʿAmmār has been killed—so what of it?’
“He answered, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The rebellious faction will kill him.”’
“Muʿāwiyah retorted, ‘Did we kill him? It was ʿAlī and his companions who killed him; they brought him and threw him between our lances—or, he said, between our swords.’” (4)
I say: The battle of Ṣiffīn took place in the months of Ṣafar and part of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, in the year 37 AH.
I read to the ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khalaf: Yaḥyā ibn Abī al-Suʿūd informed you, Shahdah informed us, Ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us, Abū ʿUmar al-Fārisī informed us, Muḥammad ibn
