Al-Thawrī, on the authority of Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Abū al-Bakhtarī, said:
On the Day of Ṣiffīn ʿAmmār declared, “Bring me a drink of milk.” He drank it and then said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The last draught you will taste in this world will be a draught of milk.’” He then stepped forward and was killed. (1)
Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Zuhrī—through his father, from an unnamed transmitter—relates that he heard ʿAmmār at Ṣiffīn proclaim:
“The gardens of Paradise are at hand, the wide-eyed maidens have been wedded to me; today we shall meet our beloved Muḥammad ﷺ.”
Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm reported—Rabīʿah ibn Kulthūm narrated to us, from his father—who said:
“I was in Wāsiṭ when Abū al-Ghādiya arrived wearing patched garments; he was a tall man. After he had sat down he said, ‘We used to regard ʿAmmār as one of our best, yet while I was in the Qubāʾ Mosque I heard him say’—and he uttered some remark—‘If only I could find supporters against him, I would trample him.’
“Then, on the Day of Ṣiffīn, ʿAmmār came walking at the head of the battalion. A man thrust at him, his mail coif slipped off, so I struck him, and it was ʿAmmār’s head.” He added, “A client of ours said, ‘I have never seen clearer misguidance than his.’” (2)
ʿAffān narrated to us—Ḥammād narrated to us—from Kulthūm ibn Jabr, from Abū al-Ghādiya, who said:
“I heard ʿAmmār reviling ʿUthmān and insulting him, so I threatened to kill him. When the Day of Ṣiffīn arrived, ʿAmmār was charging at the troops, and someone said, ‘That is ʿAmmār.’ I stabbed him in the knee; he fell, and I finished him off. People then exclaimed, ‘ʿAmmār has been killed.’ When ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ was informed he said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “His killer and the one who strips him will both be in the Fire.”’” (3)
