the Fire (1).
Abū ʿAwānah likewise records the same report, with the isnād of al-Qāsim al-Ḥudānī → Qatādah → Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd → ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah → his father → ʿUthmān.
He also transmits—through Ḥammād ibn Salamah → Abū al-Tayyāḥ → ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Hudhayl—from ʿAmmār, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, ‘The rebellious faction will kill you’ (2).”
Reports on this topic come from several other Companions; taken together, the tradition is mass-transmitted (mutawātir) (3).
Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah said: I heard Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal asked about this matter, and he replied, “There is more than one authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith from the Prophet ﷺ on it,” and he disliked saying anything further.
Al-Thawrī, through Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Laylā al-Kindī, narrated: Khabbāb came to ʿUmar, who said, “Come closer; no one has a better claim to this seat than you—except ʿAmmār.”
Al-Thawrī, through Abū Isḥāq, from Ḥārithah ibn Muḍarrib, said: A letter was read to us
(1) Al-Haythami cites the report in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid, 3 / 242, attributing it to Abu Yaʿla; al-Tabarani records it in all three of his Muʿjams in an abridged version of the story. Ibn Hajar comments in Fath al-bari, 1 / 543: the saying about ʿAmmar – “the rebellious faction will kill ʿAmmar” – was transmitted by a group of Companions: Qatadah b. al-Nuʿman (as mentioned above), Umm Salamah in Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah in al-Tirmidhi, ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs in al-Nasaʾi, ʿUthman b. ʿAffan, Hudhayfah, Abu Ayyub, Abu Rafiʿ, Khuzaymah b. Thabit, Muʿawiyah, ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs, Abu al-Yasar, and ʿAmmar himself. All are found in al-Tabarani and others, and most of their chains are sound or at least good. Additional Companions also relate it, but listing them all would be lengthy.
(2) Al-Haythami records it in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid, 9 / 295, noting that Abu Yaʿla transmits it, al-Tabarani gives a similar version, and al-Bazzar narrates it in abridged form; its isnad is hasan (reliable).
