to build the mosque. So we began carrying one brick at a time, whereas ʿAmmar would carry two bricks at a time, until his head became covered with dust.
My companions told me—although I did not hear it directly from the Messenger of Allah—that he started shaking the dust from his head while saying, “Woe to you, son of Sumayyah! The rebellious faction will kill you (1).”
Khalid al-Haddhaʾ, from ʿIkrimah, who heard Abu Saʿid relate this, transmitted the wording: “Woe to Ibn Sumayyah; the rebellious faction will kill him. He will be calling them to Paradise while they will be calling him to the Fire.” And he kept saying, “I seek refuge with Allah from tribulations (2).”
Warqaʾ: from ʿAmr ibn Dinar, from Ziyad, the client of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs (3), from ʿAmr, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘The rebellious faction will kill ʿAmmar (4).’” Shuʿbah also narrated it from ʿAmr, but said: “from a man of Egypt, from ʿAmr.”
Ibn ʿAwn: from al-Hasan, from his mother, from Umm Salamah—traced back to the Prophet: “The rebellious faction will kill ʿAmmar (5).”
Maʿmar: from Ibn Tawus (6), from Abu Bakr ibn Hazm, from his father, who said: “When ʿAmmar was killed, ʿAmr ibn Hazm came in to ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs and said, ‘ʿAmmar has been killed, and the Prophet had said…’”
