“what then if I live to see a fitnah (trial)?”
He answered, “Hold fast to the Book of Allah.”
The man asked, “Suppose every group is claiming to call to the Book of Allah?”
Ibn Masʿūd replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘When people differ, Ibn Sumayyah will be with the truth.’ (1)
Its chain of transmission is broken.
ʿAmmār al-Duhni—through Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from Ibn Masʿūd—narrated: “I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Whenever Ibn Sumayyah is offered two alternatives, he chooses the easier of the two.’ (2)
It was reported by al-Thawri and others from him, while some transmitted it from al-Duhni, through Sālim, through ʿAlī ibn ʿAlqamah, from Ibn Masʿūd.
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Siyyāh—through Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from ʿĀʾishah—related: “I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Whenever two options were placed before ʿAmmār, he would choose the more rightly guided of the two.’ (3)
This was also transmitted by ʿAbdullāh ibn Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from his father, who stated that ʿĀʾishah said so.
ʿAmmār did criticize ʿUthmān over certain matters; had he refrained, it would have been better—may Allah be pleased with them both.
