ʿAmr ibn Murrah narrated, from Abū al-Bukhtarī: ʿAlī was asked about ʿAmmār and replied, “He is prone to forgetfulness (1), yet when reminded he recalls. Faith has entered his hearing and his sight, and, by Allah’s will, the rest of his body as well (2).”
A group reported—through al-Thawrī, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from a freedman of Ribʿī, from Ribʿī—that Hudhayfah related, tracing it back to the Prophet ﷺ: “Follow the two who will come after me: Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. Take guidance from the guidance of ʿAmmār, and hold fast to the covenant of Ibn Umm ʿAbd (3).”
A number of transmitters narrated it from al-Thawrī while omitting the freedman of Ribʿī. Zāʾidah and others likewise reported it from ʿAbd al-Malik, and it has also been transmitted through ʿAmr ibn Harim, from Ribʿī, from Hudhayfah.
Ibn ʿAwn narrated, from al-Ḥasan, that ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ said, “I hope the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pass away loving a man whom Allah would then consign to the Fire.” People replied, “We used to think he loved you and appointed you to office.” He said, “Allah knows best whether he truly loved me or was simply winning my loyalty. But we did see that he loved one man in particular: ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir.” They said, “That is the man you killed at Ṣiffīn.” He answered, “Indeed—by Allah—we killed him (4).”
