Chapter: Part of it
Ibn ʿAbbās relates from the Prophet ﷺ: “From the time of Adam onward I have descended only through lawful wedlock, never through fornication.”
This ḥadīth is weak; two of its transmitters are deemed unreliable: al-Wāqidī and Abū Bakr ibn Abī Sabrah.
A similar report is cited from Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from ʿAlī. Even if the attribution to Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad were sound, the chain would still be broken (munqaṭiʿ); nevertheless, the meaning is correct.
Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ narrates from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shuqayq, from Ibn Abī al-Jadʿāʾ: I said, “Messenger of Allah, when were you a prophet?” He replied, “When Adam was between soul and body.”
Manṣūr ibn Saʿd—and Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, whose wording is quoted here—both said: Badīl ibn Maysarah told us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shuqayq, from Maysarah al-Fajr, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “When were you a prophet?” He said, “When Adam was between soul and body.”
Al-Tirmidhī recorded: al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ told us; he said: al-Walīd ibn Muslim told us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. The Prophet ﷺ was asked, “When was prophethood ordained for you?” He answered, “Between the creation of Adam and the breathing of the soul into him.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “A ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth.”
I (the author) say: Were it not for a degree of weakness in al-Walīd ibn Muslim, al-Tirmidhī would have deemed it ṣaḥīḥ.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr reported from Ibn Isḥāq: Thawr ibn Yazīd narrated to me
