— Ziyad (1) ibn Jubayr, on the authority of his father, from al-Nuʿmān.
Shuʿbah narrated: Iyās ibn Muʿāwiyah informed me. Ibn al-Musayyib asked me, “From which tribe are you?” I replied, “From Muzaynah.” He said, “I still remember the day when ʿUmar announced the death of al-Nuʿmān ibn Muqarrin from the pulpit.”
al-Wāqidī said, “The Battle of Nahāwand occurred in the year 21 AH.”
I [the author] add: Saʿīd retained that information even though he was only seven years old.
Al-Nuʿmān had several brothers: Suwayd, known as Abū ʿAdī; Sinān, who was present at the Battle of the Trench; Maʿqil, the father of the ḥadith scholar ʿAbd Allāh; ʿAqīl, called Abū Ḥakīm; and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
It is related from Mujāhid that he said, “The weepers among the sons of Muqarrin were seven.”
al-Wāqidī further remarked, “I heard that they all took part in the Battle of the Trench.”
It has also been said that al-Nuʿmān’s kunya was Abū Ḥakīm, and that the banner of Muzaynah was placed in his hand on the Day of the Conquest.
Those who reported from him include his son Muʿāwiya, Muslim ibn Hayṣam, and a number of others.
Ibn Isḥāq stated: “He was killed while serving as the commander of the troops, in the year 21 AH.”
Shuʿbah transmitted, through ʿAlī ibn Zayd from Abū ʿUthmān, who said: “I brought ʿUmar the news of the death of al-Nuʿmān ibn Muqarrin, and he covered his face with his hand and wept.”
