a certain assignment.
When I came back, he asked, “How did you find authority?”
I answered, “O Messenger of Allah, I truly thought that all people were my servants. By Allah, I shall never again take charge of any post as long as I live.” (1)
Baqiyyah reported: Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maysarah narrated to me; Abū Rāshid al-Ḥubrānī said:
“I met al-Miqdād, the cavalryman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in Ḥimṣ. He was seated on one of the money-changers’ chests, his great size spilling over it, on his way to the battlefield.
I said to him, ‘Allah has already excused you.’
He replied, ‘Surah al-Buhūth has left us no excuse: “Go forth, whether light or heavy” (Tawbah 9:41).’
Yahyā al-Ḥimmānī related: Ibn al-Mubārak told us, from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr narrated to us, from his father, who said:
We were sitting with al-Miqdād one day when a man passed by and said, “Glad tidings to those two eyes that beheld the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, we would love to have seen what you saw.”
I listened, amazed, for he had spoken only good words.
Then al-Miqdād turned to him and said, “What makes one of you wish to witness an occasion from which Allah kept him absent? He does not know how he would have behaved had he been there. By Allah, men stood in the very presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet Allah flung them on their faces into Hell because they neither responded to him (3) nor affirmed him.
Will you not praise Allah—
