Ishaq al-Asadi informed us; Ibn Khalil informed us; al-Labban informed us; Abu ‘Ali al-Haddad informed us; Abu Nuʿaym informed us; Ahmad ibn al-Musnadi informed us; Musa ibn Harun narrated to us; ‘Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us; Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, from Ibn ‘Awn, from ‘Umayr ibn Ishaq, from Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed me over—”
…we began to envy the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for none of them would accept us.
So we went to the Prophet ﷺ. He took us to his household and we found three she-goats there. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Milk these and divide the milk among us.” We would therefore milk them; each of us drank his share and we set aside the Prophet’s share.
At night he would arrive, give a greeting that roused no sleeper yet was heard by anyone awake, go to the mosque and pray, then come to his drink and partake of it.
One night, after I had drunk my portion, Satan came to me and whispered: “Muhammad visits the Ansar; they present him with gifts and he is well provided for. He has no need of this sip.” So I went to the vessel and drank it.
When it had reached my stomach and I realised there was no way to undo it, Satan rebuked me: “Woe to you! You have drunk Muhammad’s drink. He will come, not find it, curse you, and you will perish—this world and the next!’’ I was wrapped in a cloak: if I covered my feet my head remained bare, and if I covered my head my feet were exposed. Sleep would not come to me, though my two companions slept soundly, for they had done nothing of the sort.
The Prophet ﷺ arrived, greeted as usual, went to the mosque and prayed, then came to his drink. He uncovered it and found nothing. He lifted his head toward the sky, and I said to myself, “Now he will pray against me and I am ruined.” Instead he said: “O Allah, feed the one who has fed me and give drink to the one who has given me drink.”
I tightened the cloak around me, took the knife and went to the goats, intending to slaughter the fattest for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. To my surprise they were all full of milk. I brought the family’s largest vessel—one they never expected to fill—and milked them until froth topped the bowl.
I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he asked, “Have you had your drink tonight?” I replied, “Drink, O Messenger of Allah.” He drank and then passed it to me. I said, “Drink, O Messenger of Allah.” He drank again and handed it back. When I knew that the Prophet ﷺ was satisfied and that I had gained his supplication, I laughed so hard I fell to the ground.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “One of your ugly deeds, O Miqdad!” I explained, “O Messenger of Allah, such-and-such happened and I did so-and-so.” He replied, “This is nothing but a mercy from Allah. Could you not have told me so that we might wake our two companions and they too could share in it?” I said, “By the One who sent you with the truth, once I had obtained it and shared it with you, I cared not who else among mankind might obtain it.”
— (Hadith no. 2864, ‘Paradise’: Chapter on the description of the Day of Resurrection) —
From the chain of Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabir, from Sulaym ibn Amir, from al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “On the Day of Resurrection the sun will be brought near to creation until it is only one mile away.” Sulaym ibn Amir said: “By Allah, I do not know whether he meant a land mile or the small measure used for kohl.” People will then sweat according to their deeds: some up to their ankles, some up to their knees, some up to their waists, and some will be bridled by their sweat — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed to his mouth.
