Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ibn Saʿd relates: Muhammad ibn ʿUmar informed us; ʿUtbah ibn Jabīrah narrated to me from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah. He (ʿĀṣim) said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh also narrated to me from al-Zuhrī. ʾUsāmah ibn Zayd likewise reported to us—from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥanẓalah ibn ʿAlī al-Aslamī—concerning the events of the Ridda:
Khalid attacked them and killed Malik; then he fell upon the people of Buzākhah (1) and burned them because word had reached him that they had uttered vile remarks, reviling the Prophet ﷺ. After that he marched on al-Yamāmah and slew Musaylimah.
The report continues: Khalid returned to Medina with the captives, accompanied by seventeen men from the delegation of Banū Ḥanīfah. He entered the mosque wearing a heavy cloak stained with rust from his armor, his sword at his side and arrows tucked into his turban.
He passed by ʿUmar, who said nothing to him, and then entered upon Abū Bakr, who received him with every kindness. When ʿUmar learned of this, he remained silent.
ʿUmar’s only grievance against him was that he had killed Malik ibn Nuwayrah and had married his widow.
Juwayriyyah ibn Asmāʾ said: Khalid ibn al-Walīd had extraordinarily sharp eyesight. He once sighted a lone rider who turned out to be bringing news of al-Ṣiddīq’s death and of Khalid’s dismissal.
Ibn ʿAwn said: When ʿUmar assumed leadership he declared, “I shall certainly remove (2) Khalid so that it may be known that Allah grants victory to His religion”—that is, without the need for Khalid.
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah reported from his father: When ʿUmar became caliph he wrote to Abū ʿUbaydah, “I have appointed you and dismissed Khalid.”
Khalīfah said: ʿUmar appointed Abū ʿUbaydah over Syria; Abū ʿUbaydah in turn placed Yazīd over Palestine, Shurahbīl ibn Ḥasanah over the Jordan district, Khalid ibn al-Walīd over Damascus, and Ḥabīb ibn

(1) Buzakha (with an u-vowel on the first syllable; the consonant khaʾ is the dotted letter). According to al-Asmaʿi, it is a modest water source in the Najd region. Abu ʿAmr al-Shaybani adds that it was a watering place of the Banu Asad where a major battle took place in the caliphate of Abu Bakr against Tulayha ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi, who had claimed prophethood after the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Muslims were victorious; Tulayha fled, later performed ʿumra, and went on to Mecca as a Muslim. (2) The printed text has been corrupted to read “la yarmi”.
