—she is jet-black, long-haired, large-breasted, and short of stature.’
They began to egg her on, chanting:
“O ‘Uzzā, muster a might unmatched by any other (1);
Cast off your veil before Khalid and prepare for battle!
For if you do not kill the man Khalid,
You will incur an immediate sin and be disgraced.”
Khalid then rushed at her and slew her, saying, “Al-‘Uzzā is finished; there will be no ‘Uzzā after today.” (2)
Al-Zuhrī relates—through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Azhar:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ḥunayn moving among the people, asking after Khalid’s saddle. When he was shown where it was, he looked at Khalid’s wound, and I thought he blew on it.” (3)
Ibn ʿUmar said: “The Prophet ﷺ sent Khalid to the Banū Jadhīmah. He killed and took captives. The Prophet ﷺ then raised his hands and declared twice, ‘O Allah, I disavow before You what Khalid has done.’” (4)
Al-Wāqidī narrates—from a man, from Iyās ibn Salamah, from his father:
“When Khalid returned after what he had done to the Banū Jadhīmah, Ibn ʿAwf reproached him, saying, ‘You have acted in the manner of the Age of Ignorance; you killed them on account of your uncle al-Fākih—may Allah fight you!’”
