Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

was the mark of martyrdom.

His merits are many. Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq appointed him supreme commander over all the generals, and he laid siege to Damascus; he and Abū ʿUbaydah conquered the city.

He lived sixty years, felled a host of champions, yet died upon his bed—so let the eyes of cowards never be cooled.

He died in Homs (1) in 21 AH, and his mausoleum, standing at the gate of Homs, commands reverence.

(1) The biographical works disagree on the place where Khalid b. al-Walid died—was it Hims (Emesa) or Madinah? A careful review of the transmitted reports may lead to a more convincing conclusion. A. Ibn al-Mubarak, in Kitab al-Jihad, cites Hammad b. Zayd → Abd Allah b. al-Mukhtar → Asim b. Bahdala → Abu Waʾil (Hammad was unsure about the last link). The report ends: “When Khalid died, ʿUmar attended the funeral and said: ‘There is no harm if the women of the house of al-Walid shed tears for Khalid, so long as it is not accompanied by naqʿan or laqlaqa.’ ” B. Yahya al-Qattan narrates the same content through Sufyan → Habib b. Abi Thabit → Abu Waʾil. C. Abu Hudhayfa, in al-Mubtadaʾ wa-l-Futuh, quoting Muhammad b. Ishaq, relates that when Khalid died, ʿUmar walked in his funeral while Khalid’s mother lamented: “You are better than a thousand thousand of men when the faces of warriors fall.” Saif b. ʿUmar gives a similar account in al-Ridda wa-l-Futuh, but with a weak chain. D. Ibn Saʿd transmits through Kathir b. Hisham → Jaʿfar b. Burqan → Yazid b. al-Asamm: “When Khalid b. al-Walid died his mother wept over him. ʿUmar said: ‘Mother of Khalid, is it Khalid and his reward you mourn? I adjure you: do not stop until your hands are blackened with dye.’ ” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar deems this isnad sound in al-Isaba. E. Al-Bukhari, in his Sahih, cites ʿUmar’s statement: “Let them weep over Abu Sulayman so long as there is no naqʿan or laqlaqa.” Ibn Hajar notes in Fath al-Bari 3/161 that al-Bukhari connected the chain in al-Tarikh al-Awsat via al-Aʿmash → Shaqiq: when Khalid died, the women of Banu al-Mughira gathered to mourn him; someone proposed that ʿUmar send to forbid them, whereupon he uttered the above words. Al-Bukhari also records it in his Tarikh 1/46 through ʿUmar b. Hafs → his father → al-Aʿmash → … (chain continues).
