Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn Abī al-Dardāʾ stated: My father narrated to me, from my grandfather Sulaymān, from Umm al-Dardāʾ, from Abū al-Dardāʾ, who said:

When ʿUmar entered Syria, Bilāl asked him to allow him to stay there, and ʿUmar consented. Bilāl continued: “My brother Abū Ruwayḥa—the man between whom and me the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established brotherhood—took up residence in Darayyā among the people of Khawlān. He and I approached a clan of Khawlān and said:

‘We have come to you seeking marriage. We were once disbelievers and Allah guided us, slaves and Allah liberated us, poor and Allah enriched us. If you marry us, then all praise is due to Allah; but if you turn us away, there is no might and no power except with Allah.’”

So they married us.

Later Bilāl saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, and the Prophet was saying, “What is this distance, O Bilāl? Has the time not come for you to visit me?” He awoke distressed, saddled his mount, and set out for Medina. On reaching the grave of the Prophet ﷺ he began to weep beside it, rubbing his face upon it. Al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn came forward, and he embraced and kissed them.

They said, “O Bilāl, we long to hear your adhān.” He agreed, ascended to the roof, and began the call. When he proclaimed, “Allāh is Greatest, Allāh is Greatest,” the whole of Medina shook. When he proclaimed, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,” its trembling increased. When he proclaimed, “I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah,” the maidens emerged from their quarters crying, “The Messenger of Allah has returned!” Never was a day seen in Medina, after the passing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with more weeping men and women than on that day (1).

Its chain of transmission is weak, and the report is munkar.

Qutaybah said: al-Layth narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd (2), who said: “ʿUmar spoke of the excellence of Abū Bakr …”

(1) Ibn al-Athir reproduces the entire report in Usd al-Ghabah, vol. 1, pp. 244–245, without citing a chain of transmission. (2) The manuscript says “Saad,” but the correct reading, adopted here, is Yahya ibn Saʿid ibn Qays ibn Amr al-Ansari al-Najjari, Abu Saʿid the judge.
