—the blazing sun, torturing him, and forcing him to repeat, “Your god is al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā.” He would answer only, “One, One.”
When the news reached Abū Bakr he went to them and said, “Why are you trying to kill this man? He will never obey you.”
They said, “Then buy him.” So he purchased him for seven awqiyahs and set him free. (1)
He informed the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Let me have a share in him, Abū Bakr.” He replied, “I have already emancipated him.” (2)
Ibn ʿUyaynah transmitted—from Ismāʿīl, from Qays—who said:
“Abū Bakr bought Bilāl, while he was pinned beneath stones, for five awqiyahs of gold. They remarked, ‘Had you refused to pay more than a single awqiyah, we would still have sold him.’ He responded, ‘By Allah, had you refused to take anything less than a hundred awqiyahs, I would still have bought him.’ (3) Its isnād is sound.
Isrāʾīl (4) narrated—from al-Miqdām ibn Shurayḥ, from his father, from Saʿd—who said:
“We were six men in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The idolaters said, ‘Drive these people away from you, so they will not dare to confront us.’ I was one of them, together with Ibn Masʿūd, Bilāl, a man from Hudhayl, and two others. Then Allah revealed: ‘Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord …’—the two verses [al-Anʿām 52–53]. (5)"
