Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi
  1. Al-Tufayl ibn ʿAmr ibn Ṭarīf al-Dawsī
A Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, he was a noble chieftain obeyed among the Arab elite. Daws is a branch of the Azd tribe.
Al-Tufayl was nicknamed “Dhū al-Nūr” (the Possessor of Light)⦗1⦘, and he embraced Islam in Mecca before the Hijrah.
Hishām ibn al-Kalbī said: Al-Tufayl ibn ʿAmr ibn Ṭarīf was called Dhū al-Nūr because he once said, “O Messenger of Allah, Daws has been overwhelmed by fornication; so supplicate against them.” He replied, “O Allah, guide Daws.” Al-Tufayl then said, “O Messenger of Allah, send me to them and grant me a sign.” He answered, “O Allah, give him light.” … and he related the rest of the narration⦗2⦘.
In al-Maghāzī of Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī it is recorded: “Al-Kalbī told us, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from al-Tufayl al-Dawsī.”⦗3⦘

(1) The manuscript reads “Dhu al-Tufaytayn”; we have corrected it on the basis of the subsequent context and the versions in al-Istīʻab, Usd al-Ghabah, and al-Isabah. (2) Ibn ʻAbd al-Barr records in al-Istīʻab, 5:223, through the chain Ahmad b. Muhammad – Ahmad b. al-Fadl – Muhammad b. Jubayr – al-Harith b. Abi Usamah – Muhammad b. ʻImran al-Asadi – Hisham b. al-Kalbi: the Companion Tufayl b. ʻAmr was called “Dhu al-Nur” (the man of light) because, after embracing Islam and asking the Prophet ﷺ to grant him a sign to guide his tribe, a light shone between his eyes; fearing people would think it a disfigurement, it was moved to the end of his whip, where it illuminated the darkest night. The same episode is reported by al-Bukhari (nos. 4392, 6397), Muslim (no. 2524), and Ahmad, 2:243, 448, through the route Sufyan – Ibn Dhakwan – ʻAbd al-Rahman al-Aʻraj – Abu Hurayrah: Tufayl complained that the tribe of Daws persisted in sin; the Prophet ﷺ prayed, “O Allah, guide Daws and bring them here.” (3) The chain cited in (2) that passes through Muhammad b. al-Saʼib al-Kalbi and his shaykh Abu Salih Bazam is extremely weak; see al-Istīʻab, 5:224.
