Ibn Saʿd said: He is Thabit ibn Zayd ibn Qays ibn Zayd ibn al-Nuʿman ibn Malik ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj ibn al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj.
Abu Zayd the philologist, Saʿid ibn Aws ibn Thabit ibn Bashir ibn Abi Zayd al-Ansari—one of the descendants of Thabit ibn Zayd—narrated to us. The philologist remarked, “He is my grandfather.”
He fought at Uhud and was one of the six who gathered the Quran in full. He later settled in Basra, marking out property there, and then returned to Medina, where he passed away.
ʿUmar stood by his grave and said, “May Allah have mercy on you, Abu Zayd! Today the most trustworthy man on earth has been buried.” (1)
His son Bashir was killed on the Day of al-Harra. (2)
Al-ʿAqadī reported: ʿAlī ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us from al-Hasan Abū Muhammad, who said, “We visited Abu Zayd; his leg had been wounded at Uhud, yet he gave the adhan (call to prayer) and the iqama (commencement of the prayer) while seated.” (3)
It is said that Abu Zayd’s given name was Aws, and it is also said that it was Muʿadh, but the first opinion is the sounder one.
