The Prophet ﷺ loved her and used to praise her. She lived for about thirty years. Abū al-ʿĀṣ died in the month of Dhu al-Ḥijjah, in the year 12 AH, during the caliphate of al-Ṣiddīq (Abū Bakr).
71 – Ummāmah bint Abī al-ʿĀṣ*
The granddaughter whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would carry while he prayed (1).
She was his granddaughter. ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib married her during the caliphate of ʿUmar; she remained with him for some time and bore him children. She outlived him, after which al-Mughīrah ibn Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, of the Hāshim clan, married her. She died in his household after giving birth to his son Yaḥyā ibn al-Mughīrah.
She passed away during the rule of Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān and left behind no transmitted reports.
72 – Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī, Thābit ibn Zayd ibn Qays ibn Zayd**
He was one of the senior Companions and among those who had memorised the entire Quran during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.
(3) Umm Atiyya, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in while we were washing his daughter. He said: ‘Wash her three times, five times, or more if you think it necessary, using water and lote-tree leaves; put camphor in the final washing. When you finish, let me know.’ When we had finished, we informed him, and he handed us his waist-wrapper, saying: ‘Wrap her in this as the first layer of the shroud.’
‘In the last washing’ means in the final rinse; ‘inform me’ (adhanani) means ‘notify me’. The word haqw—whether the ḥaʾ is read with fatḥa or kasra—denotes his waist-wrapper (izar). Literally, al-haqw is the spot where the izar is fastened, and by extension the garment itself is called by that name.
This narration is also found in al-Bukhari (1257, 1258, 1261); Muslim (939), Book of Funerals, chapter on washing the deceased; Abu Dawud (3142); al-Tirmidhi (990); al-Nasaʾi 4/28–33; and Ibn Majah (1458), all in their respective chapters on washing the dead.
