The Names of the Prophet ﷺ and his Kunyah:
Al-Zuhri narrated from Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, who said: “I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘I have several names: I am Muḥammad; I am Aḥmad; I am al-Māḥī, by whom Allah obliterates unbelief; I am al-Ḥāshir, at whose feet people will be gathered; and I am al-ʿĀqib.’” Al-Zuhri added, “Al-ʿĀqib means the one after whom there is no prophet.” This report is agreed upon. Al-Zuhri also said, “Allah has named him ‘ra’ūf, raḥīm’—Most Kind and Most Merciful.”
Ḥammād ibn Salamah related from Jaʿfar ibn Abī Waḥshiyyah, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘I am Muḥammad, I am Aḥmad, I am al-Ḥāshir, I am al-Māḥī, al-Khātim, and al-ʿĀqib.’” This chain of transmission is sound and good.
Another wording states: “I am Aḥmad, Muḥammad, al-Muqaffā, al-Ḥāshir, the Prophet of Mercy, and the Prophet of the Battle.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ reported: Al-Layth told us, saying, “Khālid ibn Yazīd related to me, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from ʿUqbah ibn Muslim, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, that he entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān. The latter asked him, ‘Can you recount the names of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Jubayr used to enumerate?’ He replied, ‘Yes. They are six: Muḥammad, Aḥmad, Khātim, Ḥāshir, ʿĀqib, and Māḥī.’ As for Ḥāshir, he was sent together with the Hour as a warner to you; as for ʿĀqib, he came after the Prophets; and as for Māḥī, Allah erased through him the sins of those who follow him.”
ʿAmr ibn Murrah narrated from Abū ʿUbaydah, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would mention some of his names to us, saying, ‘I am Muḥammad…’”
