Saʿīd ibn Yazīd Abū Maslamah narrates, through Abū Naḍrah, from Jābir, who said:
“My father told me: ‘I hope I shall be among the first to be struck down tomorrow; therefore I commend my daughters to your good care.’ He was indeed killed, and I buried him together with another man. My heart would not rest until I dug him out and buried him by himself six months later. The earth had not consumed anything of him except a small piece of the cartilage of his ear-lobe. (1)

Jābir said, “I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘My father left behind a debt, and we possess nothing with which to repay it except what the palms yield. Come with me, lest the creditors treat me harshly.’ The Prophet walked around a pile of harvested dates, prayed, and then sat upon it; he paid them what was due, and an amount equal to what he had just given them still remained. Allah spoke to your father directly and said, “My servant, ask of Me and I shall grant you.” He replied, “I ask You to return me to the world so that I may be killed for Your sake a second time.” Allah said, “It has already been decreed by Me that they shall not be returned to it.” He then said, “My Lord! Convey (what has happened to me) to those I left behind.” So Allah revealed: ‘Do not think of those who are killed in the path of Allah as dead; rather—’”}
