Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ibn Asad ibn Sāridah ibn Tazīd (1) ibn Jusham ibn al-Khazraj, the Anṣārī, al-Sulamī, better known as Abū Jābir.
He was one of the twelve deputies on the Night of ʿAqabah, took part in Badr, and was martyred at Uḥud.

Shuʿbah reports—from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir:
“When my father was killed on the day of Uḥud, I kept uncovering his face and weeping, while the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tried to stop me—yet he did not—and my aunt was also weeping for him. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Whether you weep for him or not (2), the angels have continued to shade him with their wings until you lifted him up (3).’”

Sharīk reports—from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Nubayḥ al-ʿAnazī, from Jābir, who said:
“My father and my uncle were struck down on the day of Uḥud. My mother brought them, having placed both of them on a camel, and set off with them toward Madīnah. Then a herald called out, ‘Bury the slain where they fell!’ So we turned back and laid them to rest in the very spots where they had fallen (4).”

(1) The correct reading is Tazid —with an initial ta marked by two dots above—exactly as Ibn Hazm records it in Jamharat ansab al-Arab, p. 356; the printed edition mistakenly gives Yazid. (2) This wording is that of Muslim. Bukhari has three variants: “whether you weep or do not weep,” “weep or do not weep,” and “do not weep for him.” (3) Reported by Ahmad, 3/298; Bukhari, nos. 1244 (Funerals, “Visiting the deceased after death”) and 4080 (Maghazi, “Those Muslims killed at Uhud”); Muslim, no. 2471 (§130) in “Virtues of the Companions”; and al-Nasaʾi, 4/13 (“Funerals: Weeping for the dead”). A parallel chain is also in Ahmad, 3/307; Bukhari, nos. 1293 and 2816 (“The angels’ shade over the martyr”); Muslim, no. 2471; and al-Nasaʾi, 4/11-12—all through Sufyan from Muhammad b. al-Munkadir. (4) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 3/2/105; Ahmad, 3/308; Abu Dawud, no. 3165 (“Funerals: Carrying the dead from one land to another”); al-Nasaʾi, 4/79 (“Funerals: Where the martyr is to be buried”); and Ibn Majah, no. 1516 (“Funerals: Prayer over martyrs and their burial”)—all via Sufyan from al-Aswad b. Qays; the chain is sound. Al-Tirmidhi records it as well, no. 1717 (“Jihad”), through Shuʿbah from …
