Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

The man in question, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, was counted among the leading and exemplary Companions. His given name had originally been al-Hubāb, a name by which his father was known (Abū Hubāb), but the Prophet ﷺ changed it and named him ʿAbd Allāh.

He was present at Badr and at every battle thereafter.

Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Mandah relates that his nose was struck on the day of Uḥud, so the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to have a nose made of gold. (1)

Closer to the mark, however, is what has been transmitted from ʿĀʾishah—on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy—who said: “One of my incisors was knocked out, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to replace it with a gold tooth.” (2)

ʿAbd Allāh was martyred at the Battle of Yamāmah. His father had died in the year 9 AH, and the Prophet ﷺ dressed him in his own shirt, led the funeral prayer for him, and sought forgiveness on his behalf as an act of honor toward his son—until the verse was revealed: “And never pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave” (Q 9:84). (1) This is a slip on the part of Ibn Manda, as noted by Ibn al-Athir in Usd al-Ghaba 3/296 and by Ibn Hajar in al-Isaba 6/143. The correct view is that the Companion whom the Prophet ﷺ instructed to fashion a golden nose was ʿArfaja al-Taymi al-Saʿdi. He had been one of the notable horsemen in the pre-Islamic period and fought at the battle of al-Kilab, where his nose was severed. After he embraced Islam the Prophet ﷺ allowed him to replace it with a nose made of gold. His hadith is recorded by Abu Dawud (4232) in the Book of Rings, chapter “Binding teeth with gold”; by al-Tirmidhi (1770) in the Book of Dress, chapter “What is reported about bracing teeth with gold”; by al-Nasaʾi 8/163 in the Book of Adornment, chapter “If a man loses his nose, may he make one of gold?”; and by Ahmad 5/23. Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan and Ibn Hibban declared it sahih (1466). (2) Al-Zaylaʿi states in Nasb al-Raya 4/237 that Ibn Qaniʿ, in his Muʿjam al-Sahaba, transmitted the chain: Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Jabir – Ismaʿil ibn Zurara – ʿAsim ibn ʿAmara – Hisham ibn ʿUrwa – from his father – that ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul said: “One of my incisors was broken on the day of Uhud, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered me to have a gold incisor made.” See also al-Isaba 6/143 and Usd al-Ghaba 3/296. The word nadarat means “it fell out”; in the printed edition it has been misread as badarat. (3) Reported by al-Bukhari (1269) in the Book of Funerals, chapter “Shrouding with a shirt”, and also under nos. 4670, 4672 and 5796; by Muslim (2400) in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions, chapter “Merits of ʿUmar”, and 2774 in “Characteristics of the hypocrites”; by al-Nasaʾi 4/36 in the Book of Funerals, chapter “The shirt in the shroud”; by al-Tirmidhi (3097) in Tafsir, chapter on Surat al-Tawba; and by Ibn Majah (1523) in the Book of Funerals, chapter “The funeral prayer for the people of the qibla”. Muslim’s wording runs: “Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba narrated to us, from Abu Usama, from ʿUbayd Allah, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: …”
