and they said to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, “You are under no obligation to go near them; see to your own affair.”
ʿUrwah related: “We have been informed that the people wept for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and exclaimed, ‘If only we had died before him; we fear that we may be tested after him.’”
Maʿn replied, “But by Allah, I would not have wished to die before him until I could affirm his truth after his death just as I affirmed it while he was alive.” ⦗1⦘
Ibn al-Athīr says: “Maʿn ibn ʿAdī ibn al-ʿAjlān al-Balawī, an ally of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf, was present at the pledge of ʿAqabah and at Badr; he is well known.”
I (the compiler) add: He was the brother of ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAdī ibn al-Jadd ibn al-ʿAjlān al-Balawī, an ally of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf. ʿĀṣim was the chief of Banū al-ʿAjlān and the father of Abū al-Baddāḥ ibn ʿĀṣim. ʿĀṣim likewise fought at Badr, and his hadith is recorded in the Four Sunan collections. Maʿn was among those martyred at the Battle of Yamāmah in 12 AH.
- ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī *
He is ʿAbd Allāh, son of al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUbayd ibn Mālik ibn Sālim—Sālim being the man nicknamed “al-Ḥublā” (“the pregnant one”) because of his large belly—ibn Ghanm ibn ʿAwf of the Khazraj branch of the Helpers. His father is commonly known as Ibn Salūl, the notorious hypocrite. Salūl al-Khuzāʿiyyah was Ubayy’s mother.
