63 – Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn ʿAmr ibn Abī Zuhayr al-Anṣārī*
ibn Mālik ibn Imruʾ al-Qays ibn Mālik ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Khazraj.
Al-Anṣārī, al-Khazrajī, al-Ḥārithī (1), a veteran of Badr, one of the twelve leaders (naqīb), and a martyr. The Prophet ﷺ forged a bond of brotherhood between him and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (2) ibn ʿAwf. Saʿd proposed to give ʿAbd al-Raḥmān half of his wealth and to divorce one of his two wives so that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān might marry her, but ʿAbd al-Raḥmān declined and prayed for him. Saʿd was also one of the deputies on the night of the Pledge of al-ʿAqabah.
Ibn Isḥāq transmits—through Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who will go and find out for me what has become of Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ?” A man from the Helpers replied, “I will.” He went out, searching among the fallen, until he found Saʿd grievously wounded, pinned to the ground (3), drawing his final breaths.
He said, “O Saʿd! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to see whether you are among the living or among the dead.”
Saʿd replied, “I am already among the dead. Convey my greetings to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and say: ‘May Allah reward you on my behalf with the finest reward ever given to a Prophet for his nation.’ And convey my salutations to your people on my behalf,”
