Ayyūb transmitted from Thumāmah ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Anas, who said:
“On the Day of Yamāmah I passed by Thābit ibn Qays while he was anointing himself with embalmment perfume. I exclaimed, ‘Uncle! Do you not see what has befallen the people?’ He replied, ‘Right now, my nephew.’
Ibn ʿAwn reported—Mūsā ibn Anas, from Anas:
I came to him while he was perfuming himself and said, ‘Do you not see?’ He answered, ‘Right now, my nephew.’ Then he advanced, saying, ‘Face to face like this we should strike the enemy. How badly you have trained your peers! This is not how we used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ He fought on until he was slain. (1)
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated—Thābit, from Anas:
Thābit ibn Qays arrived on the Day of Yamāmah having scented himself and dressed in two white garments, and it was in those very garments that he was later shrouded. When the troops had retreated he declared, ‘O Allah, I repudiate what these people have brought and I disown the deeds of those people. How badly you have trained your peers! Leave us with them for a moment.’ He then charged, fought until he was killed, and his coat of mail was stolen. A man later saw him in a dream, and Thābit told him, ‘It is inside a cooking pot beneath a saddle-cloth…’
