60 – ʿUkāshah ibn Miḥṣan, Abū Miḥṣan al-Asadī

The blessed martyr, Abū Miḥṣan al-Asadī—an ally of Quraysh, one of the earliest converts, a veteran of Badr, and among those assured Paradise.

The Prophet ﷺ placed him in command of the expedition to al-Ghamr (1), but they encountered no enemy.

It is reported from Umm Qays bint Miḥṣan that she said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away when ʿUkāshah was forty-four years old. A year later he was killed at Buzākhah, during the caliphate of Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq, in 12 AH. He was counted among the most handsome of men.” (2)

The verb *adhanat* means “to inform.” *bisarm*: *sarm* denotes cutting off, cessation or disappearance. *hidaʾ*: swift, rapid. *subaba*: the small remainder of a drink that stays at the bottom of a vessel. *yatasabbuha*: al-Qamus says, “tasababtu al-maʾ: I drank its *subaba* (last drops).” *qaʿr* of a thing: its bottom. *kaziz*: filled to the brim. *qaruḥat*: i.e. their stomachs developed sores and wounds because of the rough leaves they were eating. (1) Thus reads the base manuscript. Muʿjam al-Buldan 4/212 has “al-Ghamrah,” as does the Sira 2/612. Yaqut describes it as a watering place on the Meccan road, marking the boundary between Tihama and Najd. Ibn al-Faqih adds that Ghamrah lay within the lands of Medina on the Najd route; the Prophet sent ʿUkasha b. Mihsan there with forty men. When they reached al-Ghamr, the inhabitants, having learned of their approach, fled. He camped at their wells, dispatched scouts, located their livestock and seized two hundred camels, which he drove back to Medina. See the sira works, the annalistic chronicles and Muʿjam al-Buldan. (2) The episode is recorded in al-Hakim 3/228. Buzakhah was a watering place of the Banu Asad where a major engagement took place during Abu Bakr’s caliphate against Tulayha b. Khuwaylid al-Asadi.
