Abu Umamah ibn Sahl related that the Prophet ﷺ visited Asʿad when the illness known as ash-shawkah had seized him. He ordered that a complete ring of cautery be applied around Asʿad’s neck, and only a short time later Asʿad passed away, may Allah be pleased with him. (1)
59 – ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwan, son of Jabir ibn Wuhaib, Abū Ghazwan al-Māzinī
A noble leader, commander, and warrior; Abū Ghazwan al-Māzinī, ally of Banū ʿAbd Shams.
He was the seventh person to enter Islam, migrated to Abyssinia, fought at Badr and the subsequent campaigns, was counted among the renowned archers and among the commanders of the expeditions, and he is the one who surveyed and founded Basra.
Those who transmitted reports from him include Khālid ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAdawī, Qabīṣah ibn Jābir, Hārūn ibn Riʾāb, al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī—though he did not meet him—and Ghunaym ibn Qays al-Māzinī.
It is also said that his kunya was Abū ʿAbd Allah.
(1) Ibn Saʿd records the report (3/2/141) with the chain: al-Waqidi → Muʿammar ibn Rashid → al-Zuhri → Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, in a version longer than the one quoted above. The isnad is defective, because al-Waqidi is judged unreliable.
