corpulent, and yet we have never carried anyone lighter than him.”
When this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he said, “He has other bearers besides you. By Him in whose hand is my soul, the angels rejoiced at the soul of Saʿd, and the Throne quaked for him.” (1)
Yazīd ibn Hārūn reported: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah told us, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“On the Day of the Trench I went out following the tracks of the people. I heard the dull sound of footsteps behind me, and there was Saʿd, accompanied by his nephew al-Ḥārith ibn Aws, carrying Saʿd’s shield, so I sat down.
Saʿd passed by wearing a coat of mail whose ends protruded, for he was among the tallest and broadest of men. I slipped into an orchard where I found a group that included ʿUmar.
He said, ‘What has brought you here? By Allah, you are indeed bold! What makes you feel safe that some calamity might not strike?’
He did not stop reproaching me until I wished the earth would split open then and there and swallow me.
A man in a helmet approached; he raised it from his face and it was Ṭalḥah, who said, ‘Woe to you! You have gone too far. Where can one seek refuge and flight except to Allah?’ (2)
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm, narrated to me that ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ reported from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘We were returning with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Mecca. When we reached Dhūʾl-Ḥulayfah, Usaid ibn Ḥuḍayr was between me and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some youths of the Anṣār from Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal met him.
Usaid asked them, and they informed him of his wife’s death. He drew his cloak over himself and wept.
I said to him, “May Allah forgive you! Do you weep over a woman when you are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Allah has already…”’
