for there are no people I would rather contend with for Your sake than those who harmed Your Prophet, denied him, and drove him out. O Allah, if You have now laid down the fight between us and them, then let this wound be my martyrdom, and do not take my life until my eyes are cooled by what befalls the Banu Qurayza. (1)
Hisham narrated—from his father, from ʿĀʾishah—who said:
“A man of Quraysh named Ḥibbān ibn al-ʿAriqah shot Saʿd, striking the median vein. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set up a tent for him inside the mosque so that he could visit him closely.
“Then his wound formed a hard scab as though healing. Saʿd thereupon supplicated, saying, ‘And if You have indeed ended the war between us and them, make the wound burst open and let my death come through it.’
“It suddenly burst at the base of his neck, and those present were startled to see the blood flowing. They cried, ‘People of the tent, what is this?’ They found his wound gushing, and he died from it.”
Agreed upon (2) in a version longer than this.
Al-Layth narrated—from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir—who said:
“Saʿd was struck on the Day of the Confederates; his median vein was severed. The Prophet ﷺ cauterised it with fire, but his arm swelled, so it was left. The blood then poured out, and he cauterised it again.”
