And most authorities count it among the Musnad traditions of Ibn ʿAbbās.
Ahmad records in his Musnad: “Yūnus narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Shumaylah narrated to us, from a man who traced it back to Saʿīd al-Ṣarrāf, from Isḥāq ibn Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, from his father:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This clan of the Anṣār is a shield; loving them is faith, and hating them is hypocrisy.”’ (1)
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah and a number of other scholars state that he was one of the delegates on the Night of ʿAqabah.
Maʿrūf ibn Kharrabūdh (2) relates from Abū al-Tufayl, who said:
“Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah and al-Munḏir ibn ʿAmr came to purchase provisions for the people of ʿAqabah after the party had departed. The Meccans noticed them; Saʿd was taken captive while al-Munḏir slipped away.
Saʿd said: ‘They beat me until they left me as though I…’” (3)
…she had made a vow; would it be sufficient if I emancipate a slave for her? He said: “Free a slave on behalf of your mother.”
Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 2761 (Book of Bequests, chapter: It is recommended, when someone dies suddenly, for relatives to give charity and fulfil the deceased’s vows); no. 6698 (Book of Faith and Vows, chapter: One who dies while owing a vow); no. 6959 (Book of Stratagems, chapter: Zakat—one must not separate what is combined nor combine what is separate to avoid the alms-tax). Also by Muslim, no. 1638 (Book of Vows, chapter: The command to discharge vows); Abu Dawud, no. 3307 (Book of Oaths and Vows, chapter: Fulfilling a vow on behalf of the deceased); al-Tirmidhi, no. 1546 (same heading); al-Nasaʾi 7/20–21 (Book of Oaths and Vows, chapter: One who dies while owing a vow); Ibn Majah, no. 2132 (Book of Expiations, same chapter); Malik, p. 292 (Book of Vows and Oaths, chapter: What is obligatory in vows that involve walking). Al-Hakim likewise recorded it, 3/254.
(1) Reported by Ahmad, 5/285, with a weak chain: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Shumayla, Saʿid al-Sarrāf, and Ishaq ibn Saʿd ibn ʿUbada are only declared reliable by Ibn Hibban. Nonetheless the topic is supported by other reports, e.g., al-Baraʾ ibn ʿAzib said he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ state concerning the Ansar, “None loves them except a believer, and none hates them except a hypocrite,” recorded by al-Bukhari 7/78 and Muslim no. 75; and from Anas ibn Malik, marfuʿ: “A sign of faith is love of the Ansar, and a sign of hypocrisy is hatred of the Ansar,” recorded by al-Bukhari 7/78 and Muslim no. 74. Muslim also transmits corroborating narrations from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (no. 77) and from Abu Hurayra (no. 76).
