54 – Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr al-Khazrajī, one of the nobles of his people.
It is related in the report of Abū Hurayrah and Jābir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who is your leader, O Banū Salimah?” They answered, “Al-Jadd ibn Qays, although he is somewhat miserly.” He replied, “And what illness is more ruinous than miserliness? No, your leader is the fair-skinned, curly-haired man—Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ.” (1)
I say: He is the one who ate with the Prophet ﷺ from the poisoned sheep on the day of Khaybar and was thereby harmed (2); he was also among the foremost veterans of Badr.

(1) The report is cited in al-Istiʿab 1/311 and in Usd al-Ghaba 1/218 without an isnad and both works ascribe it to Ibn Ishaq. Al-Hakim (3/219) reproduced it through the chain: Sahl b. ʿAmmar al-ʿAtaki → Muhammad b. Yaʿla → Muhammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqama → Abu Salama → Abu Hurayra; he declared it authentic and al-Dhahabi concurred. Their judgment is untenable, for Muhammad b. Yaʿla al-Sulami is weak and Muslim did not transmit from him. Al-Bukhari said of him: “his hadith is worthless”; Abu Hatim: “abandoned in hadith”; al-Nasaʾi: “not reliable.” He was also weakened by al-ʿUqayli and al-Saji, and Ibn ʿAdi remarked: “no one follows him in his narrations.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar has given a detailed discussion of this hadith in al-Isaba 1/248 under the entry of Bishr b. al-Baraʾ; see there.
(2) Ahmad (2/451) and al-Bukhari transmitted it: no. 3169 in the Book of Jizya, chapter “If the polytheists betray the Muslims, are they to be pardoned?”; no. 4249 in the Book of Maghazi, chapter “The sheep that was poisoned for the Prophet at Khaybar”; and no. 5777 in the Book of Medicine, chapter “What is mentioned about the Prophet’s being poisoned,” all through the route: al-Layth → Saʿid b. Abi Saʿid → Abu Hurayra, who said: “A sheep containing poison was presented to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ. The Prophet said: ‘Gather for me those of the Jews who are here,’ and they were brought. He asked them: ‘I will question you about something; will you tell me the truth?’ They replied: ‘Yes, Abu al-Qasim.’ He asked: ‘Who is your father?’ They said: ‘Our father is so-and-so.’ The Prophet said: ‘You have lied; your father is such-and-such.’ They answered: ‘You are right and have done well.’ He then asked: ‘Will you speak truthfully if I question you about something else?’ They said: ‘Yes, Abu al-Qasim; and if we lie you will know it, just as you knew it concerning our father.’ The Prophet asked: ‘Who are the inhabitants of the Fire?’ They replied: ‘We shall be in it for a short while, then you will succeed us in it.’ The Prophet said: ‘Remain disgraced in it; by Allah, we shall never follow you into it.’ Then he said…
