non-Arab forces regrouped at al-Zārah. Al-ʿAlāʾ marched against them, encamping at al-Khaṭṭ on the seashore. He fought and besieged them until al-Ṣiddīq passed away.
The people of al-Zārah then asked for a truce, which he granted. He next attacked the inhabitants of Dārīn, killed the fighting men, and took the women and children captive.
He sent ʿArfajah to the Persian coast; ʿArfajah destroyed their ships, conquered an island in Persian territory, and built a mosque there. (1)
Mujālid reports from al-Shaʿbī:
ʿUmar wrote to al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī while he was in al-Baḥrayn: “Proceed to ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān. I have put you in charge of his district, and I believe you are better provided for than he is, so acknowledge his right.”
Al-ʿAlāʾ set out with a small party that included Abū Hurayrah and Abū Bakrah. When they reached Niyās (2), al-ʿAlāʾ died.
Abū Hurayrah used to say, “I witnessed three things from al-ʿAlāʾ that have made me love him forever:
- On the day of Dārīn (3) he crossed the sea on horseback;
- When we were heading for al-Baḥrayn he prayed to Allah at al-Dahnāʾ, whereupon water gushed forth for us and we all drank our fill;
- One of our men had forgotten some of his belongings, so he went back, reached the spot, but found no trace of the water.”
