His wife Hind—sister of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām—recounted: “It is as though I can still see him, shield in hand, saying, ‘O Allah, do not turn me back.’ He was killed, and so was his son Khallād.”
(Isrāʾīl, from Saʿīd ibn Masrūq, from Abū al-Ḍuḥā): ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ said to his sons, “You kept me from Paradise on the Day of Badr. By Allah, if I live on, I shall surely enter Paradise.”
When the Day of Uḥud arrived, ʿUmar said, “I had no concern but him; I went searching and found him in the very first rank.” (1)
Mālik said, “He and ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām were wrapped in a single shroud.”
Mālik, reporting from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah, related that word had reached him that a flood had damaged the grave of ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ and Ibn Ḥarām. Their resting place was opened so they could be moved, and they were found unchanged, as though they had died only yesterday. One of them had been wounded and had placed his hand upon the wound; he had been buried in that state. When the hand was lifted from the wound and then released, it returned to its former position. Between the Day of Uḥud and the day they were exhumed lay forty-six years. (2)
= Abu Qatadah, who was present, reported: “Amr ibn al-Jamuh came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I fight in the path of Allah until I am killed, will I walk in Paradise with this leg of mine fully sound?’ – for he was lame. The Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘Yes.’ Amr, together with his nephew and a freedman of his, were killed on the Day of Uhud. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by the slain and said, ‘It is as though I see you walking with this leg of yours healed in Paradise.’ He then ordered that the three of them be placed in a single grave. Its chain of transmission is hasan, as al-Hafiz states in Fath al-Bari 3/173.
(1) All its transmitters are trustworthy, but the isnad is interrupted.
(2) Malik records it (p. 291, Book of Jihad, chapter “Burying several persons in one grave when necessary,” no. 50) with reliable transmitters, though the report is mursal. Ibn Saad 3/562–563 also transmits it through the route of al-Walid ibn Muslim—who said, “al-Awzai told me, from al-Zuhri, from Jabir”—in a longer wording. This isnad is sound, as al-Hafiz affirms in Fath al-Bari 3/173. See likewise Ibn Hisham’s Sirah 2/98 and Ibn Kathir’s Sirah 3/86–87.
