three things: first, that you let me drink fresh water; second, that you keep me from eating anything slaughtered for the idols; and third, that you inform me when they intend to kill me (1).
Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Abī Najīḥ narrated to us from Māwiyah, the freedwoman of Ḥujayr—Hubayb had been confined in her house—and after she embraced Islam she would relate:
“By Allah, while he was still a prisoner I peered at him through the crack of the door, and in his hand was a cluster of grapes the size of a man’s head from which he was eating, though I knew of no grape anywhere on earth at that time. Then he asked me for a razor so that he might shave with it (2).”
- Muʿādh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ ibn Kaʿb al-Anṣārī—
al-Khazrajī, al-Salamī, the Madinan, veteran of Badr and of the ʿAqaba pledge, the one who killed Abū Jahl.
Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim said, citing Ibn Isḥāq: “Muʿādh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ ibn Zayd ibn Ḥarām ibn Kaʿb ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salamah was present at Badr.”
