“I am a man—my dearest friend once bound me
when we were camped beneath the palms nearby—
never to sit out life fettered and idle;
I strike with the sword of Allah and His Messenger.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That swagger (1) is a gait that Allah and His Messenger abhor, except in a place (2) such as this (3).”
As for the ‘amulet’ of Abu Dujānah, it is unfounded; I have no idea who fabricated it (4).
(1) In the printed edition the word was mistakenly set as “al-maytah” (carrion).
(2) The printed edition omits the word “mithla” (like).
(3) The episode is recorded in full by Ibn Hisham, 2/66-67, and by Ibn Saʿd, 3/2/101, on the authority of Anas, up to the end of the verses. It is also transmitted by Ahmad, 3/123, and by Muslim (2470) in “The Merits of the Companions – the merits of Abu Dujana,” through the chain of Hammad b. Salamah – Thabit – Anas: “The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, took a sword on the Day of Uhud and said: ‘Who will take this from me?’ They stretched out their hands, each one saying, ‘I will, I will.’ He asked, ‘Who will take it with its due right?’ The people then held back. Simak b. Kharashah, Abu Dujana, said, ‘I will take it with its due right.’ He took it and split the heads of the polytheists with it.” – Aḥjama means “he withdrew and refrained.” – “He split the heads of the polytheists” means “he cleft their skulls.” – The report that begins “It is indeed a gait …” is cited by al-Haythami in al-Majmaʿ, 6/109, who attributes it to al-Tabarani and states that it contains narrators unknown to him.
(4) Al-Laʾali reports—likewise in Tadhkirat al-Mawduʿat, pp. 211-212—on the authority of Musa al-Ansari: “Abu Dujana al-Ansari complained, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, while I was asleep last night I opened my eyes and found a devil at my head. He kept growing taller and taller; I reached out and felt that his skin was like that of a hedgehog.’ The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, replied, ‘And you, Abu Dujana—are you to be harmed? By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, your house shelters an evil dweller! Summon ʿAli b. Abi Talib.’ When ʿAli arrived, he said, ‘Abu’l-Hasan, write a document for Abu Dujana after which nothing will harm him.’ ‘What shall I write?’ he asked. He replied: ‘Write: In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Compassionate. This is a writ from Muhammad, the unlettered Arab Prophet, the Tihami, the Abtahi, the Makkan, the Madinan, the Qurashi, the Hashimi, bearer of the crown, the staff, the rod, the she-camel, the Quran and the qiblah, the one who proclaims “There is no god but Allah,” to everyone who enters this house, visitor or resident, except one who comes with goodness. Henceforth: there is ample room for us and for you in the truth. If the entrant be a passionate lover, a brazen aggressor, an open sinner, or a claimant—rightful or false—then this is the Book of Allah speaking between us in truth, while Our messengers record what you devise. Leave the bearers of the Quran and go to the idol-worshippers, to those who set up another god alongside Allah—there is no god but He, Lord of the Mighty Throne—lest a blast of fire and molten copper be loosed upon you and you find no helper. And when the heaven is rent asunder and becomes red like ointment, on that Day neither human nor jinn shall be questioned about his sin.’ He then folded the document and said, ‘Place it by your head,’ so he placed it there, —
