, ibn Abī al-Aqlah (1) al-Anṣārī.
Near ʿUsfān a clan from Hudhayl, roughly one hundred men, surrounded them. They killed eight of the party and captured Khubayb ibn ʿAdī and Zayd ibn al-Dathinnah, then sold the two captives in Mecca.
Among the eight who were slain were: ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṭāriq—an ally of Banū Ẓafar—Khālid ibn al-Bukayr al-Laythī, and Marthad ibn Abī Marthad al-Ghanawī.
I have set out the full details of this incident in my work The Campaigns of the Prophet ﷺ (2).
The Martyrs of Bir Maʿūnah (3)
In the fourth year AH the Prophet ﷺ dispatched forty men, placing al-Munḏir ibn ʿAmr al-Sāʿidī—one of the participants at Badr—in command. Among them were Ḥarām ibn Milḥān al-Najjārī, al-Ḥārith ibn al-Ṣimmah, ʿUrwah ibn Asmāʾ, Nāfiʿ ibn Budayl ibn Waraqāʾ al-Khuzaʿī (4), and ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah, the freedman of al-Ṣiddīq. They travelled until they reached Bir Maʿūnah, whereupon they sent Ḥarām with the Prophet’s letter.

(1) In the printed edition the name is mistakenly given as “al-Aflah.”
(2) I.e. in his work Tarikh al-Islam. The last portion of the narrative of the expedition of al-Rajiʿ appears in the printed text, 1/223, edited by Muhammad ʿAbd al-Hadi Shuʿayra, but most of the account is missing; the printed version also contains corrupt readings and omissions.
(3) The event is reported by al-Bukhari (no. 4090) in the Book of Maghazi, “Chapter on the expedition of al-Rajiʿ, Raʿl, Dhakwan, and Biʾr Maʿuna.” Biʾr Maʿuna is a site in the land of Hudhayl between Mecca and ʿUsfan; the encounter is also known as the “Expedition of the Qurra” (the Reciters). See further Ibn Hisham, 2/183–189; Ibn Saʿd, 2/1/36; al-Tabari, History, 3/33; Tarikh al-Islam, 1/224; al-Bidaya, 4/71; Sharh al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya, 1/133; Jawamiʿ al-Sira, 178–180; and Ibn Sayyid al-Nas, 2/46.
(4) The original text reads “Rafiʿ b. Waraqa al-Khuzaʿi,” which is incorrect; the correction follows the aforementioned sources.
