and I do not know whether I shall be delivered from it or not. (1)
Al-Zuhri relates, through Sulaymān ibn Yasār, that the Prophet ﷺ used to send Ibn Rawāḥah to Khaybar to estimate the harvest apportioned between him and the Jews. They collected some jewellery from their women and said, “This is for you—just make the assessment lighter on us.” He replied, “O community of Jews! By Allah, you are among the most detested of Allah’s creation to me, yet that will never drive me to deal unjustly with you; bribery is forbidden spoil.” They said, “It is on such justice that the heavens and the earth stand.” (2)
Hammād ibn Salamah transmitted—from ʿAbd Allāh, as we think, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—a similar report.
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Musnad of al-Mizza informed us;
(1) Its transmitters are reliable, yet the chain is mursal (it stops at a Successor). Al-Suyuti reports in al-Durr al-Manthur, 4/282, that Ibn al-Mubarak, Ahmad in al-Zuhd, and Ibn Asakir relate—through Bakr ibn Abd Allah al-Muzani—that when the verse “There is not one of you but will pass over it” (Q 19:71) was revealed, Abd Allah ibn Rawaha went home and wept; his wife wept, the maid wept, and the whole household joined in. When their tears subsided he asked, “Family, why are you crying?” They replied, “We do not know; we only saw you weeping, so we wept.” He said, “A verse has come down to the Messenger of Allah informing me that I must enter the Fire, but not telling me that I shall come out of it—that is why I cried.” Abu Nuaym records in Hilyat al-Awliya, 1/118, via the chain Faruq ibn Abd al-Kabir → Ziyad ibn al-Khalil → Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Flih → Musa ibn Uqba → Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, that Ibn Rawaha wept when he set out for the expedition of Muʾta; his family wept with him, and he said, “By Allah, I am not weeping from fear of death or longing for you, but because of Allah’s words, ‘There is not one of you but will pass over it; with your Lord this is a decree that must be fulfilled’ (19:71). I am certain I shall pass over it, but I do not know whether I shall be saved from it or not.” See also Ibn Asakir, Tahdhib, 7/395.
(2) Ibn Hisham states in al-Sira, 2/345, quoting Abd Allah ibn Abi Bakr, that the Messenger of Allah used to send Abd Allah ibn Rawaha to assess the date harvest between the Muslims and the Jews. If they complained, “You have been unfair to us,” he would reply, “If you wish, the assessment stands for you; if you wish, for us.” The Jews would remark, “On such justice the heavens and the earth are upheld.”
