Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

“Indeed, he will be resurrected as a nation unto himself (1).”

In its chain appears a transmitter—Muḥammad (2)—who is not relied upon, and parts of the report contain obvious irregularities.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Usāmah ibn Zayd related:

“The Prophet ﷺ was ten years older than Zayd.
He added: Zayd was short, very dark-skinned, and had a flat nose (3).”

Ibn Saʿd transmitted this through al-Wāqidī, who said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Usāmah narrated it to us from his father.” Ibn Saʿd then commented, “This is how he is described in this narration.”

Another chain, however, reports that he was extremely fair-skinned, while his son Usāmah was black. For that reason the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased with the remark of Mujazziz, the qāʾif (lineage expert), who, upon examining their footprints, said: “These feet belong to one another (4).”

(1) Related by al-Hakim, 3/216-217, who declared it sound; al-Dhahabi concurred. It is also found in al-Matalib al-Aliyah, no. 4057. The editor quotes al-Busiri: al-Nasa i also records it in the Kubra with a chain whose transmitters are trustworthy. Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ, 9/417-418, attributing it to Abu Yaʿla, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani; the version of al-Tabarani contains an additional wording which he mentions before stating: the transmitters in Abu Yaʿla, al-Bazzar, and in one isnad of al-Tabarani are those of the two Sahihs, except for Muhammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqama, whose reports are classed as hasan. See p. 130, note 1. The expression shanafahu shanfan means “he detested him.” (2) This refers to Muhammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqama b. Waqas al-Laythi. Al-Bukhari cited his reports only alongside those of another narrator, and several critics judged him reliable. Some considered him mildly weak, a criticism that does not lower him below the rank of hasan; hence Ibn Hajar writes in al-Taqrib: “Truthful, though prone to mistakes.” Al-Dhahabi weakens him here, even though he agreed with al-Hakim’s grading of the hadith as sahih in the Mustadrak. See Ibn Hajar’s detailed rebuttal in Fath al-Bari, 7/142-145. (3) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 3/1/30, with a weak chain on account of the weakness of al-Waqidi; it contradicts the sound version that will follow. (4) Reported by Ahmad, 6/82, 226, and by al-Bukhari: no. 2555 in the Book of Merits, “Description of the Prophet”; no. 3731 in “Merits of the Companions,” chapter on the virtues of Zayd b. Haritha; and nos. 6770-6771 in the Book of Inheritance, chapter on qāʾif, through Ibn Shihab, from ʿUrwa, from ʿAʾisha, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, entered upon me …”
