Her mother was Salmā bint ʿUmays, and her maternal aunt was Asmāʾ.
Ibn Isḥāq reported—from Ibn Qusayṭ (1), through Muḥammad ibn Usāmah ibn Zayd, from his father—that he heard the Prophet say to Jaʿfar: “Your outward form most resembles mine, and your character most resembles mine; you are part of me and of my lineage (2).”
Isrāʾīl narrated—from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, and likewise from Hubayrah ibn Maryam and Hāniʾ ibn Hāniʾ, from ʿAlī—both of them said (3): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Jaʿfar, “You resemble me in form and in character (4).”
(1) He is Yazid b. Abd Allah b. Qusayt al-Madani, a trustworthy transmitter cited by all six canonical compilers. In the printed edition his family name was mistakenly changed from “Qusayt” to “Basit.”
(2) All the transmitters in this chain are reliable. Ahmad (Musnad, 5/204) also records the report through Muhammad b. Ishaq → Yazid b. Abd Allah b. Qusayt → Muhammad b. Usama → his father, who said:
“Jaʿfar, Ali and Zayd b. Haritha once gathered together. Jaʿfar said, ‘I am the one dearest to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ Ali said, ‘I am the one dearest to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ Zayd said, ‘I am the one dearest to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ They then agreed: ‘Let us go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him.’ Usama b. Zayd relates: They came seeking permission to enter, and the Prophet said to me, ‘Go out and see who is at the door.’ I said, ‘It is Jaʿfar, Ali and Zayd’—not daring to mention my father’s name. He said, ‘Let them in.’ When they entered they asked, ‘Who is dearest to you?’ He replied, ‘Fatima.’ They said, ‘We are asking about the men.’ He answered, ‘As for you, Jaʿfar, you most resemble me in appearance and character, you are from me and part of my lineage. As for you, Ali, you are my son-in-law and the father of my descendants; you are of me and I am of you. As for you, Zayd, you are my freedman, you are of me, attached to me, and the most beloved of the people to me.’ ” The report is also found in Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqat, 4/1/24.
(3) In the printed edition the word was mistakenly read as “qala.”
(4) The hadith of al-Baraʾ is recorded by Bukhari (no. 2698, Book of Reconciliation; and no. 4251, Book of Military Expeditions) and by Tirmidhi (no. 3769, Book of Virtues, chapter on the merits of Jaʿfar). The hadith of Ali is reported by Ahmad (1/98 and 1/115) and by Abu Dawud (no. 2280, Book of Divorce, chapter “Who has greater right to the child”). Ahmad also records it (1/108) through Israʾil → Abu Ishaq → Haniʾ b. Haniʾ → Ali.
