ʿAbd Allah ibn Numayr narrated—from al-Ajlah, from al-Shaʿbī—who said:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from Khaybar, Jaʿfar came out to meet him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ embraced him, kissed him between the eyes, and said, ‘I do not know which of the two makes me happier: Jaʿfar’s arrival or the conquest of Khaybar.’ (1)
In the version of Muḥammad ibn Rabīʿah, from al-Ajlah, it adds: he kissed him between the eyes, hugged him, and held him close.
Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ linked Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib and Muʿādh ibn Jabal as brothers.
Al-Wāqidī rejected this, saying, ‘The brotherhood pacts occurred only before Badr; then the verse on inheritance was revealed and those pacts ceased, while Jaʿfar was at that time in Abyssinia.’
Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated—from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father:
‘The daughter of Ḥamzah was moving about among the men when ʿAlī took her by the hand and placed her with Fāṭimah in her howdah. He, Jaʿfar, and Zayd then disputed over her custody.
ʿAlī said, “She is my cousin, and I was the one who brought her out.”
Jaʿfar said, “She is my cousin, and her maternal aunt is my wife.”
The Prophet ﷺ ruled in favor of Jaʿfar and said, “The maternal aunt is like the mother.”
Jaʿfar then rose and began hopping around the Prophet ﷺ, circling him.
He ﷺ asked, “What is this?”
He replied, “It is something I saw the Abyssinians do for their kings.” (3)
